DirectCD will cause Windows to become unstable

Each time I start my computer the following notice appears in my system
tray.....

"DirectCD will cause Windows to become unstable. Windows has prevented
these drivers from loading. Click here for more details."

When I click for more details, the following description is displayed....

"A driver is installed that causes stability problems with your system. This
driver will be disabled. Please contact the driver manufacturer for an update
that is compatible with this version of Windows."

Is anyone familiar with this or have any suggestions on what might be wrong
and how i should resolve it?

Not sure this question is appropriate in this forum, but don't know where to
find help. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

I use Adaptatec by Roxio. If Direct CD is an earlier version go to
Roxio.com and update the driver or find out who the manufacturer is of your
program and go do the same at their site.

If you use DirectCD version 4 or earlier, you get this message. Look at
upgrading to Easy CD Creator 6 or Easy Media Creator 7.

Craig A.: Adaptec was not the software. Adaptec sold/gave Easy CD
Creator/DirectCD to Roxio. Recently, Roxio has sold Easy CD Creator/Drag to
CD (DirectCD) to Sonic.

Sounds like you installed EZ CD 4 (or upgraded a Win9x system to XP). If
so, leaving it alone will allow EZ CD to work without the Direct CD but
you'll always have the message box. If you just do simple burning, XP
has that built in so I would just remove the program entirely. Or
upgrade to a later version. Just removing the driver files for Direct
CD stops the error message but causes other issues (I know, I've dealt
with this on a few client computers), so remove all of it or upgrade.

First, what version are you using? And, is it the retail product or an OEM
prodcut, that is one bundled with a CD writer? Some OEM products have no
updates, although most can be upgraded for less than the full price of the
retail version.

Easy CD 4 and lower are known to be incompatible with XP, and can not be
patched to work with it. If verison 4 or less, uninstall all of it and get
something else, including a later version of Easy CD Creator, or possibly
Nero. Note that Roxio does offer a free uninstall tool, called
roxiozap.exe.

If version 5, that can be patched to work with XP, although I found its
DirectCd to be buggy, but at least it did not cause system level errors.

If version 6, the last patch to that worked well on a machine when I had
with XP SP1. I ever upgraded that PC to SP2.

Version 7 (called Easy Media Creator), latest patch works fine for me under
XP SP2.

Still using version 5 here on XP sp2 and have never had any issues.
Heard version 6 caused havoc for multiboot systems and version 7 doesn't
seem to offer much in the way of improvements for the cost of the upgrade.

I have Version 5 and bought 6 and gave it away.
Version 5 gives me Soundstream and I am able to cut wav tracks fromn LPs
and have a normalizer to keep volumn constant. 6 didn't have that. and I have
used 5 for over two years and love it. I went to Roxio.com and upgraded for
FREE to version 5.35. and did my photo and video updates as well.

You may not recognize Direct CD, but Easy CD Creator, which also
included Direct CD. The program was sold by Adaptec for version 4.
Check your Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and check your
Program Files folder for a folder called Adaptec.

Older versions of Direct CD do not work with XP. You need to remove it
through Add/Remove Programs, then To tidy up, get a registry patch file,
cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click
on it and merge it into the registry and reboot

You will then need to get and install an up to date version of the Easy
CD Creator (eg ver 6 with what they now call Drag to Disk can probably
be found cheap as ver 7 has just come out)

I found Adaptec UDF Reader at the top of "Add and Remove Programs" which
I had previously missed. After removing it, the warning about DirectCD
didn't show up.

I have never had Roxio on the machine and believe the driver was
installed by "IsoBuster". IsoBuster may not work now, but there are
other apps to do this.

Also found this patch suggestion which is supposed to correct the
problem on a site which I haven't tried:

Tried all fixes listed then some, to no avail.
Every hint of Adaptec, DirectCD were all gone in my searches on my
C-drive, Registry and in Add & Remove Programs.....
Then I tried This:
Do a Search for the file: udfrunin.exe on your c-drive in Windows Explorer.
Click on it and it will uninstall Apaptec's Direct-CD and it even ask you
first.

Save the file below to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and
double click the file. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is
done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.
