Discussion:
Changed browser and Google Gmail changed out from under me

Two things happened in about the same time frame so I just want to ask if
you've had the same experience.

1. Google changed the way they do logins on the web (somehow)
2. I changed to Chrome & Chrome-like browsers on WinXP (support)

Now, for the past two weeks or so, it takes a minimum of two but up to a
half dozen attempts at logging into Google Gmail (mail.google.com) because
the first password presentation never pops up a form for the password.
Loading Image...

If I try again, changing nothing other than killing and restarting the same
browser, it works on the second, maybe third, maybe fourth time.
Loading Image...

Notice the two presentations are different.

The one that fails every time to present a password field is the new one.
The old one, which eventually pops up, works just fine.

Just me?
Or you too?

Save the URL of the working page and reuse it the next time ?

I did that for a while when I wanted to use Advanced Search on Yahoo.

Of course, that doesn't answer the question about
the difference in web code.

Now this hints that Javascript is a dependency. And browser
Javascript versions or features may differ (so not just
any Javascript would do). Maybe the page you're entering,
eventually figures that out ? Or maybe they consider
Chrome on WinXP to be an "unsupported platform" ? If
that was the case, there should be some mention of it
on the page that appears after the login succeeds.

I've complained, for weeks, to "Ashley" who is a Google documentation
expert.

She hasn't fixed a thing in the help so I doubt that this is going to be
solved by Google help.

That's why I asked you for help! :-)

That's a good idea!
Trying now.

1. Bring up a WinXP supported browser (SRWare Iron).
2. Type mail.google.com
3. Look at the URLs which are auto-whatever converted.

This is the auto-google-created URL that fails to allow a password:
https://accounts.google.com/signin/v2/identifier?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F&ss=1&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&emr=1&osid=1&flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=ServiceLogin
Here is an old screenshot showing what it looks like when you try:
http://i.cubeupload.com/uaVxHy.gif

This is the google-auto-created URL that allows the password:
https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https://mail.google.com/mail/&ss=1&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&emr=1&osid=1#identifier
This is an old screenshot (from the previous post) which shows the GUI:
http://i.cubeupload.com/5gaGEm.gif

Notice that in both cases, I never even put in the email ID (so it has
nothing to do with the email account itself).

Also notice everything remained exactly the same, same computer, same
browser, same IP address, same background software, same operating system
(WinXP SP3), same everything.

The only thing that changed between those two sessions was I killed the
browser and restarted.

Can anyone guess as to what is going on here?
Am I the only one with this problem?

It doesn't seem to happen with (soon to be unsupported Firefox
https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https://mail.google.com/mail/&ss=1&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&emr=1&osid=1#identifie

Here is the progression with firefox:
1. Bring up Firefox (already set to clear-all upon closing)
Loading Image...
2. Type mail.google.com
Loading Image...
3. That results in a long URL
Loading Image...
4. Which allows a password entry

The problem that I reported for Chrome-like browsers *also* happens on
Firefox, only to a lesser extent.

1. Here is a screenshot with Firefox without it happening:
Loading Image...
2. Here is a screenshot with Firefox with it happening:
Loading Image...

Here is what Firefox looks like about 4 or 5 out of a half dozen times when
open in "new private window" mode to the mail.google.com URL (which gets
generated into this URL):
https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https://mail.google.com/mail/&ss=1&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&emr=1&osid=1#identifier

Here is what Firefox looks like about 1 in a handful of times when open in
"new private window" mode to the mail.google.com URL (which gets generated
into this URL):
https://accounts.google.com/signin/v2/identifier?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F&ss=1&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&emr=1&osid=1&flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=ServiceLogin

Does anyone know, in this Windows Usenet newsgroup, what in
Firefox/Google/WinXP is causing the password request to never be asked for
in one out of a half dozen Firefox invocations to mail.google.com?

Two things happened ...
<snipped duplication>
See replies to your multi-posted copy over in the Firefox newsgroup.
You may or may not be implying duplicity so I should remind you that what
people *think* is a bona-fide "Firefox Usenet newsgroup" is not.

It is a non Usenet newsgroup which is sometimes (but sporadically)
reflected by some (but certainly not even most, let alone all) bona-fide
public news servers.

Hence, a multi-post is the *only* proper way to attempt the concept of a
"cross post".

You may not have been implying duplicity - since your statement is only one
sentence, so if I inferred that you implied ill intent, I openly state that
it is just my defense mechanism kicking in.

To be clear, there is no "correct" Usenet newsgroup that I know of for:
a. This problem which is on WinXP (for me, anyway)
b. Which is due either to me switching to a supported browser
(Which is SRWare Iron which is supported on WinXP)
c. Or which is due to the fact Google *changed* their login setup recently
(I don't know what caused the problem as I deleted Firefox)

I didn't have this problem before Google made the change but I happened to
switch from Firefox to Chrome (which has the problem) and then to a
Chrome-like browser (as per suggestions here, due to Google spyware on
Chrome).

I was very clear about the conditions.

So since you are suggesting I go to Firefox (even though I did, and even
though I don't think that's really the right place either), what Usenet
newsgroup do you know of which handles this type of cross-platform problem?

Is there a Chrome-like (SRWare Iron) Usenet newsgroup?

Here is another test, where the results seem to be relatively random.

Firefox version 52.0.2 (32-bit) on Windows XP SP3:

1. Bad Firefox invocation:

2. Good Firefox invocation:

Thanks much for your research. I'd noticed Gmail getting weird on my
XP also. I don't use it much as I'm a paranoid type who wants my damn
email ON my computer. Which of course leads to saving about 10 years
worth that I'm too lazy and fearful to throw away. But once in a while
I need a secondary email addy so Gmail fills the bill. After which I
forget I created it and the next time I want one I make another. One
of your sign-ons shows them all. Very useful.

I think I found a reliable workaround which I need to test further.

If I turn off Javascript, I always get the old Gmail login interface, which
is the only one that works.
https://accounts.google.com/signin/v1/lookup

After I log in to Gmail, I can Javascript back on if I want, and Gmail
works just fine.

So the workaround is to temporarily turn off Javascript until after I log
in to Gmail.

What has been working perfectly is the following workaround:

1. Start the browser
2. Turn off Javascript
3. Go to mail.google.com
4. Turn on Javascript
5. Enter your login
6. Enter your password
7. Click on the "try again" when it says:
JavaScript must be enabled in order for you to use Gmail
in standard view. However, it seems JavaScript is either
disabled or not supported by your browser. To use standard
view, enable JavaScript by changing your browser options,
then try again.
To use Gmail's basic HTML view, which does not require
JavaScript, click here.

Turning off Javascript just before being presented with the login works
100% of the time to avoid the new interface which is buggy and which
doesn't allow you to log in.

You can turn Javascript back on (or leave it off) at any time.
The only time it needs to be turned off is when Google is presenting you
with the sign-in page.

Just to update if others want to benefit from what I've learned.

Here's a setup that works as efficiently as I can make it so far:

0. Add a start tab which opens up the java customization menu
1. Start the browser & turn off javascript
2. Go to mail.google.com (which gives you the old Gmail interface)
3. Immediately turn on javascript (before you enter the username)
4. Enter your username & password ... and you're back in business.

Note this method skips the java challenge from Google that the previous
suggestion encounters. Both work. This is a step or two shorter.

Since I log into google many times a day, I found a *much easier* way.

When I type "mail.google.com" in my browser, if the new challenge comes up,
I simply click on my HOME button, which is now set to:
https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin?continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F&rip=1&nojavascript=1&service=mail&rm=false&ltmpl=default&scc=1&ss=1&osid=1&emr=1#identifier

That URL gets me the old login interface, which works with or without
Javascript running!

If someone can let me know what the magic is in that URL, I'd love to know.

The URL that does NOT work is:
https://accounts.google.com/signin/v2/identifier?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F&ss=1&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&emr=1&osid=1&flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=ServiceLogin

Thanks for testing this out.

I tried your slightly shorter URL (sans identifier) and it did the same
thing as with the identifier, so your shorter URL is simpler (slightly) and
does the same thing (which is good as the simpler the better).

Once I enter the login and press ENTER, it hangs forever on this URL:
https://accounts.google.com/signin/v2/sl/pwd?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F&ss=1&scc=1&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&emr=1&osid=1&flowName=GlifWebSignIn&flowEntry=ServiceLogin&cid=1&navigationDirection=forward

To be clear, are you saying you can REPRODUCE the problem that I have which
is that the sign in waits forever and never gets to the password prompt?

As for the HELP forum, there is:
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/gmail/CqvxD9L964c
and
https://support.google.com/mail/troubleshooter/2402620

But they don't seem to cover this issue.

Working backword from your URL, I tested the following with Javascript on:

The strangest thing happened by accident.

I was experimenting with UserAgent strings, and wouldn't you know it.
For the past couple of days, I haven't yet gotten the new (bad) password
presentation from Google.

You know what User Agent solved the problem?
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:33.0) Gecko/20120101 Firefox/33.0

When I use *that* user agent, I always get the *old* Gmail login
presentation (which always works).

Even when I'm using Chrome!

This has happened to me too. I don't understand how Google can monitor everything we do online in order to bombard us with interest based junk and an email full of spam that wont quit, but when it comes to verifying that an email belongs to me it takes a sign from God himself to get back into your account. Personally I am so sick of this crap.
