Hi

Switched my machine on to find that it wouldn't boot, saying that a system
file was missing or corrupt and that I should use original installation disk
and type r.

I booted from the original XP Pro installation cd, pressed r. After I was
asked to select the windows disk I got the recovery console, c:\windows
prompt.

When I type in chkdsk /f it says it is an invalid parameter. When I type
chkdsk /? it lists only /p and /r as valid parameters.

Any ideas? Am i missing something?

Thanks for any help given

Repair install:

Boot from the XP cd, and when prompted hit enter to begin setup. Press F8 to
accept the license agreement. It will then search and find your existing XP
install. Select it, and choose R for repair. Back up any important data
files in case something goes wrong(if you can).

In recovery console those are your choices for chkdsk. /P fixes file
system, /R scans for bad sectors after it checks the file system.

As Purplehaz said, you may need to do a repair install for
missing/corrupted system files.
